Goodbye, Ubuntu

When Ubuntu 11.04 came out, I immediately switched back to the "classic" gnome desktop because, well, I hated Unity. When I just upgraded to 11.10, they took that option away from me. The "classic" view that you can install is not nearly the same experience, so I attempted to manually downgrade to gnome2 to get me desktop back. Long story short, I've hosed my desktop and just don't have the energy to fix it. If I did, I'd spend the time setting up my distro of choice, Slackware, on my netbook. Instead, I'm looking for new new plug-n-play distro that's not going to take my preferences away simply because I want to upgrade the core distro. I'm looking at Debian Mint, but am open to other suggestions that are not Ubuntu-based.
